WPD carrying out cable upgrade project in Cornwall

The £300,000 project that started in January this year, is set to take place between January and March for the next five years, and involves replacing ageing high and low voltage underground cables and an underground substation with a new ground-mounted one to further secure network reliability and minimise customer interruptions to the 500 customers in the area.

While the work will greatly benefit the area’s network security, the project hasn’t been without its challenges, as distribution manager Jon Nesbitt, who is overseeing the scheme, explained: “The main purpose of the work is to further improve reliability in a busy town centre and reduce supply interruptions.

“The streets operate in a narrow one-way system, which means the road through the town centre has had to be blocked for the duration of the works, which has created a number of complicated logistical issues to resolve to allow uninterrupted deliveries to shops and homes.

“We have managed these daily by working closely with business owners, residents and the town centre management team.”
