WPD completes network refurbishment
Western Power Distribution have completed a £600,000 refurbishment of a 132kV network that runs from Devon to Cornwall.

The network runs from Alverdiscott in Devon to Indian Queens in Cornwall. Eight dual circuit 132kV steel lattice towers have been replaced to cover the increasing demand being placed on the network.
Redruth project engineer Richard Clatworthy, who is overseeing the works, said: “As part of a continuing programme of works, we had identified eight 132kV steel lattice towers that required replacement. This work maintains a vital link between mid-Cornwall and North Devon.
“Some of the complexities involved were gaining access with large cranes across farmland that required the installation of temporary roads to ensure access was both possible and safe. Plus, we had to maintain supplies to four large 132kV connected distributed generators, along with dozens of 33kV and 11kVgenerators so we could continue to export while the work took place.
“The main benefit of the work is continued serviceability of a vital link both for now and into the future.”
