Report highlights ESO’s zero carbon progress
National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) has set out how its operational strategy builds to achieve a zero carbon electricity system by 2025.
1st July 2019 by Networks

Its newly published Operational Strategy Report brings together all relevant publications from the ESO to give a full operability overview.
The report outlines the future challenges to maintaining an operational system and the five security areas where the ESO is responding, which are across:
- Frequency control
- Voltage control
- Restoration
- Stability
- Thermal.
It also offers a six-month review on progress made against these topics and key projects such as the recent black start tender process currently underway in the Southwest and Midlands area.
Fintan Slye, director ESO, said: “We’re making great progress towards our 2025 zero carbon ambitions and this report demonstrates the work we are doing to ensure we have the right products, systems and services in place to achieve it.
“Success for us is a green, safe and reliable network with lower bills for consumers. We can only achieve this by working in partnership with the rest of the industry, so it’s vital we are completely transparent and our stakeholders know how they can engage with us on the topics relevant to them.”
