The first output from the Catapult’s project was published in May 2018 and was an analysis of the current pattern of ‘effective carbon prices’ in the UK for decarbonisation in different economic sectors and activities. This showed a range of “effective carbon prices” with a number of areas that still appear “under taxed”, including coal and gas-based generation and energy consumption in homes and businesses.

Achieving climate targets

Since first publishing the “Options, Choices, Actions” report in 2015 we have witnessed the emergence of many changes that will impact how the UK meets its 2050 climate targets. The government has set out its clean growth aspirations, while also developing a number of sector deals to add detail on how it intends to deliver this. More recently, the IPCC has provided a significant body of evidence that illustrates the true scale of our climate challenges, indicating that a target of ‘net zero’ emissions is now viewed by them as critical.

£1.4bn spending plan unveiled by SP Energy Networks for RIIO2

After 12-months of extensive consultation, the company has submitted its draft business plan for the second set of RIIO price controls. According to the network, it outlines the role that its transmission system in central and southern Scotland will play in achieving the Government’s net zero carbon targets and supporting its future networks vision.
