Northern Powergrid carrying out substation upgrade
Northern Powergrid is carrying out a £4 million upgrade to a substation which will help maintain the reliability of electricity supplies to more than 90,000 customers.

The company is managing a three-year circuit breaker replacement programme at its Lackenby 66kV substation which serves customers across Middlesbrough, Redcar, Guisborough and the surrounding areas.
The project, which is due for completion in October, has included the design and installation of new electrical equipment, including the supply of 15 66kV dead tank circuit breakers, new protection and control equipment and associated civil and cabling works.
Chris Humes, the senior project manager for Northern Powergrid, said: “This investment has replaced assets that have delivered power for around 60 years on our network. They did need regular maintenance and spare parts could be costly and require a long lead time. This meant that if they had remained in operation, we would have had an increased risk of a failure in the future that could have interrupted our customers for an extensive period of time. By taking action and installing modern, easier to maintain equipment, we can improve the long-term reliability and security of supplies for the communities we serve.”
