Greg Clark, the secretary of state for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, selected the former deputy chair of the Competition Commission and deputy panel chair of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to lead the energy regulator.
The post of Ofgem chair is subject to a pre-appointment hearing by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee on 3 July.
Professor Cave has undertaken a number of roles in government. He was a member of the CMA panel which investigated the energy market between 2014 and 2016 and was also economic advisor to Ofcom, the communications regulator, between 2003 and 2006.
Ofgem announced in December that the current chairman, Davd Gray, will retire in September this year.
Lynne Embleton and Ann Robinson have also been confirmed as the new non-executive directors of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA), Ofgem’s governing body.
