Energy Systems Catapult central to ISCF Energy Revolution

The Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) will play a central role in coordinating local consortia that successfully bid for a share of the £41.5 million Energy Revolution fund.

The Prospering from the Energy Revolution - Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund - launched by UK Research and Innovation, will see the ESC delivering project integration, innovation services and technical expertise through the ‘‘Energy Revolution Integration Service'.

The fund will help create:

  • Practical smart energy system local demonstrators
  • Innovative concepts and designs to revolutionise local energy provision.

Phil New, CEO of the Energy Systems Catapult, said: "The launch of the Government's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund - Prospering from the Energy Revolution competition establishes a new chapter in the UK's mission to transform our energy system with home-grown innovation.

"The Energy Systems Catapult will play a central role in coordinating the energy revolution challenge programme through leading the Energy Revolution Integration Service which delivers project integration, innovation services and technical expertise.

"The ESC will help the energy revolution challenge programme deliver innovations that are coherent with the whole energy system and add up to more than the sum of their parts, with the Catapult providing key support services, such as: project coordination, Local Area Energy Planning, design assessment, analysis and evaluation.

"The ISCF's Energy Revolution will bring together the UK's finest businesses, researchers and local organisations to make the UK a global centre for smart energy systems - with the aim of increasing efficiency, cutting bills and carbon, and creating more high value jobs.

"As an independent, not-for-profit organisation created by Government, with whole energy systems expertise, the Energy Systems Catapult is uniquely placed to utilise its strong portfolio of capabilities, assets and highly skilled people to drive the energy revolution challenge programme forward."

Rob Saunders, interim challenge director, Energy Revolution added: "This is an exciting time for energy innovations. The convergence of new technologies with artificial intelligence, big data, and the internet of things promises a new energy future. This future will be one of lower carbon and more efficient energy supply, distribution and storage, giving consumers more control.

"This energy revolution - a crucial part of the industrial strategy - has the potential to create high quality jobs all over the country and grow companies capable of exporting."

The Prospering from the Energy Revolution - Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund competition, launched by UK Research and Innovation, allows UK businesses and organisations to apply for a share of up to £41.5 million.

There are two parts to this competition, with up to £40 million available for three smart local energy systems:

• Demonstrators that intelligently link supply, storage and demand patterns across power, heating and transport.

While up to £1.5 million is available for studies into smart local energy systems:

• Concepts and designs that combine new and existing energy technologies with: smart systems new market and regulatory solutions, such as for energy trading consumer engagement.
